On 22nd April 2024, representatives of Iraq, Turkey, the UAE, and Qatar signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a planned 1,200 km railway link as part of the major Development Road project. The project, which includes a new passenger and double-track rail freight line between the major port of Al Faw in Iraq and the Turkish border, is estimated to cost €15.9 billion (US$17 billion).
