Caltrain completes integrated tests on San Francisco – San Jose line

Caltrain has successfully completed integrated tests on the recently electrified railway line between San Francisco and San Jose. The tests included the electric multiple units (EMU), the catenary system, grounding, connection, and existing infrastructure, particularly on the final section from San Francisco to Millbrae. The 23 EMUs now have to complete 1,600 km of test runs each before passenger services can start. Caltrain's electrification project enables a transition from diesel locomotives and their infrastructure components to an electrified system. Caltrain has procured 19 seven-car EMUs of the type Kiss from Stadler for operation. In addition, the California Transportation Commission has approved funding for the procurement of a four-car battery-electric multiple unit (BEMU) to be tested. If successful, Caltrain plans to purchase six BEMUs.
